FAQ (derived from the US and UK CG Lock Websites)

I have a full racing harness
Great, that is the ultimate! So you are totally sold on the idea of ‘being at one’ with the car… and no doubt you are probably a track day regular! Many buyers of the CG Lock have full racing harnesses in their car… but have not had the regular 3-point seatbelts removed. In this case, fitting a CG Lock to the original seatbelts gets them 80% of the benefits of the harness for high-street driving (plus posture advantages on longer trips) with all the convenience of being able to reach around the cabin (e.g. leaning forward in rainy weather at T junctions, heater controls)… and wearing the full racing harness on the track. We also have found that many drivers with full racing harnesses have at least one other vehicle… so a 5 minute install of a CG Lock to those seatbelts can provide extra stability, control and comfort here too.

I have got bucket seats and don't move around
Bucket seats are fantastic for lateral movement but can do little to attenuate the laws of physics when heavy braking (submarining, or slipping forwards on the seat) or cornering hard (the hip actually comes up off the seat due to the G forces at work). The CG Lock holds the hips so the driver does not need to use the steering wheel as a brace when braking (most drivers with regular seatbelts are forced to do this, according to top ARDS instructor Sean Edwards) and keeps the hips flat and therefore avoiding spine twist (and consequent bracing of elbow and knee to keep upright). As Andy Ellis, performance instructor and mobility assessor says “you sometimes don’t realise just how much you ‘brace’ to keep yourself in your seat when driving hard”.

It is too expensive
Well as George Burns used to say when asked if he still loved his wife… “compared to what?” A simple device that is proven to improve your vehicle control and lap times, for less than a tank of petrol. With a full money back guarantee and several offers to get you significant savings and even a full 100% refund.

I don't need a CG Lock... I pretension the ineria reel and then push the seat forwards to lock me in... it does the same thing
Until the G forces of a hard turn release the inertia belt and (not anticipating the losening off), you fly into the passenger seat or into the door. Highly dangerous and not worth trying… ever!

I don't go that fast and rarely (if ever) go on track days, or off-road
OK, cool… the CG Lock is certainly not for everyone. But maybe you have kids in childseats or on booster seats? The CG Lock is the easiest way to get the tightness needed to tether a childseat (according to Professor Potvin at the University of Windsor, an expert in the area) and ideal for kids on booster seats (that are sliding on the carseat and can benefit from being a bit ‘snugger’ around the lap belt.

No kids? Well the CG Lock has also being used for improving driver and passenger posture. Pulled lightly the CG Lock keeps your hips back in the seat and your spine where it should be… against the lumbar support. Government funded research has shown that better posture and less back ache is achieved if the back is in contact with the seat all the way down the spine. To maintain that position, one has to actively use the back muscles which is not easy to keep up on longer journeys… so we tend to ‘slouch’ with the hips tilting forwards slightly and the lower spine coming away (forward) from the back of the car seat. This then leads in many cases to common muscular back ache. We have many many anecdotes of ‘cured’ back ache due to using the CG Lock. With a money back guarantee, why not give it a try?

Is it safe to use a CG Lock on a seat belt?
Yes. The CG Lock has been extensively tested using industry accepted FMVSS safety standards (Derived NCAP mid sized sedan pulse used. Tests performed to FMVSS 208). In brief, some of the same studies required for new seat belts as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Transportation Safety Administration Division (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208, 210, and 213) were used to simultaneously compare seat belts with and without the CG Lock installed. Replicate crash test simulations were conducted at 20 and 35 mile an hour frontal, 20 miles an hour lateral, and in a rollover simulation. Professional analysis of the test data showed there was no reduction (impairment or inhibition) of seat belt performance when a CG Lock was installed. Low speed tests showed better occupant stability for the seat belt with the CG Lock installed under both frontal and lateral g (gravity) loads.

Why would I want a CG Lock on my seat belt?
The CG Lock transforms a typical seat belt into a functional tool for improved driver control and increased comfort for all occupants. The CG Lock can benefit all sorts of drivers: sport and performance drivers, off road drivers and occupants, police and other emergency vehicle drivers, commuters, truckers, heavy equipment operators, military drivers (off road). The CG Lock also provides greater comfort for occupants.

How do I install the CG Lock?
The CG Lock is very simple and quick to install. No drilling or bolts are required. The CG Lock can be removed and leaves no damage to your vehicle's seat belt. The only tool you need is the supplied Allen wrench.

How do you use the CG Lock?
To use a CG Lock, insert and lock the tongue into the buckle. Push your hips all the way back against the seat back. Push hard. Adjust the seat if necessary to maintain proper spacing from the steering wheel, pedals, and other controls. Sit up straight. Adjust the lap belt low on your waist (as close to your legs as possible). Grasp the shoulder harness just above the CG Lock and pull away from the CG Lock parallel to the lap belt to tighten. Pull hard as you push your hips back into the seat. If the lap belt becomes too tight (or if you need to reach into a back pocket for things like toll money), simply rotate the thumb lever down momentarily while lifting the hip closest to the CG Lock, and the belt will loosen. To exit the vehicle, simply release the seat belt tongue in the usual way and assist the seat belt retractor in rewinding the belt. The weight of the CG Lock may impede the seat belt retractor. Failure to rewind the belt fully could result in the CG Lock and tongue being caught in the door when it is closed. Every CG Lock comes with a complete set of instructions making installation quick and easy.

Will the CG Lock work for front and rear passengers?
The CG Lock works with rear seat belts with single pass tongues. All the same comfort uses for a front seat occupant apply to rear seat occupants (comfort on long trips, stability during off road driving).

Will the CG Lock fit every car?
No. The CG Lock does NOT fit all cars. It does however, fit most cars. The CG Lock is designed ONLY for use with specific factory-installed (OEM) standard three-point lap/shoulder harnesses with single pass seat belt tongues. If someone buys a CG Lock and determines the CG Lock will not fit their vehicle, they may return the CG Lock for a full refund.

Will the CG Lock encourage aggressive driving?
The CG Lock is not a safety device. A CG Lock does not change the laws of physics. The effects of speed, braking distance, lateral G loading, acceptable angles of climb and descent, and other such driving attributes are unchanged by the presence of a CG Lock and appropriate cautions must be taken irrespective of the use of a CG Lock. The CG Lock does offer the experienced driver better control during "aggressive" driving or evasive maneuvers. The CG Lock is not intended for performance driving on public streets. Suggested uses include closed-course, sanctioned driver training under the direction and control of appropriate instructors, such as autocrossing, rally, or driving instruction during an SCCA-sanctioned event.

Will using CG Lock affect my insurance rates?
The CG Lock is not a safety device. The CG Lock has been rigorously tested. Professional analysis of the test data showed there was no reduction (impairment or inhibition) of seat belt performance when a CG Lock was installed.
